If you think Scouting’s just about knots, woggles and big shorts, then be prepared to be surprised. It’s how Richard Branson, Barack Obama and David Beckham got their start in life. Every year we help 400,000 young people in the UK enjoy new adventures; to experience the outdoors, interact with others, gain confidence and have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Who are our young people?
Scouting encourages young people from all backgrounds, male and female, to have self-belief and a voice. It helps them develop physically, intellectually, socially and spiritually. We call this ‘everyday adventure’. They just call it fun.
Who are our volunteers?
Our adults are from a variety of different backgrounds. All our leaders are volunteers, and all Scout volunteers are unpaid and the majority have a full-time job and family. Here are some other key facts:
44% of our leaders nationally are female
Many volunteers help out on a flexible basis due to other commitments
27% of volunteers nationally join because they are a parent of a young member
Volunteers don’t have to wear uniform
All leaders are covered by a comprehensive insurance policy while taking part in Scouting
All leaders go through a criminal records check to ensure they are fit to work with young people.
About the 16th Morecambe Scout Group
We are the 16th Morecambe & Heysham (Church of the Ascension) Scout Group, part of the Scout Association, and we are based in Torrisholme village, Morecambe.
We are members of the Lonsdale Scout District and West Lancashire Scout County.
The present 16th Morecambe was first registered with Headquarters on the 28th February 1957, although there is evidence that a 16th Group had existed in Torrisholme prior to this date. There is a fuller history here
Over the last few years, the Group has grown to over one hundred and thirty young people, spread over the Beaver, Cub, and Scout sections, and continues to prosper.
